WSL Women’s Championship Tour: Vans US Open of Surfing
It's the 7th stop on the tour which means it's time for one of the biggest parties in pro surfing... it's time for the Vans US Open of Surfing!
Competitive surfing has been taking place on Huntingdon Beach since 1959, today the Vans US Open of surfing is one of the largest action sports festivals. The event not only showcases the world's best surfing but also world-class BMX and skateboard competitions. BUT... let's be honest, we are mostly interested in the surfing!
Huntington Beach Pier is a classic Californian beach break and on its day can rival any beach break in the world. It’s a fun wave that is a swell magnet so often it sees good surf all year round. You might even see people surf through the pier which looks horrendous when they get it wrong.
Now, let's get into the competition! The Women's CT tour has just finished a stellar competition at J-Bay, where the girls absolutely shredded after an 18-year hiatus. Stephanie Gilmore surfer J-Bay for the first time ever, and proved to the fans that they were right... this really is HER wave! Gilmore came away with not only the win... but also the yellow Jeep Leader jersey!
J-Bay also saw the rivalry between Gilmore and Peterson heat up! The two have now won five of this years six CT events between them, seeing their positions on the top switch over the course of the competition so far. Now heading into Huntington Beach the 7th stop on the tour there are just over 2,000 points between the two... it's looking like this could be a tight race to the world title! Tatiana Weston-Webb is coming up behind Peterson, she has had an incredibly consistent year season with J-Bay being her fifth consecutive semi-final appearance. Although her current downfall is her inability to do that last push and win an event, which is the reason she is currently not proving to be a threat to Gilmore and Peterson... but there is still time for that to change.
Gilmore and Peterson may be the two at the top BUT that could all change at the Vans USopen of Surfing! Tyler Wright is still recovering from health issues after she contracted Influenza A, we wish Tyler a speedy recovery and can't wait to see her back on the tour... but with her out of this stop, who else is going to prove to be a threat to Gilmore and Peterson... we can't wait to find out!
