Birkenstock was founded by Johann Adam Birkenstock in Neustadt (Wied), Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany in 1774. Birkenstock’s idea was to create a shoe which supported and contoured the foot, an innovative alternative to the flat shoes of that time. By 1925 Birkenstock’s were sold all over Europe, and they are now one of the most famous shoe manufacturers in the world.
