Cornwall is famed for its stunning coastline, over 420 miles of beautiful sandy beaches, hidden coves and idyllic bays. It’s little wonder why there are almost 5 million tourists drawn to the county every year.

And for many a short break away to this wonderful part of the UK would include the family dog. With so many stunning beaches and trails to choose from it’s a dog walkers paradise for visitors and locals.

Unfortunately, particularly during the warmer seasons, there are a number of dog bans in place. Some are lifted, many around October/November time up until the beginning of April, while there are much shorter restrictions in place at other beaches, particularly during the summer season. Thankfully there are also a good number of beaches that welcome dogs all year round.

The number of beaches that allow dogs has increased in recent years, and Cornwall Council is currently conducting a survey as it reviews its seasonal restrictions across the county. But even as it stands the majority of beaches are dog friendly.

Some of our favourite coastal spots in Cornwall allow dogs all year round, and that includes Fistral and Watergate Bay in Newquay, two of the most popular beaches in the county and the perfect location to let your four-legged friends run wild.

If you’re looking for something a little quieter then Gorran Haven near Mevagissey is a lovely little spot for your pooch to take in the fresh sea air and dip their paws in the water. Like Fistral and Watergate Bay, it’s also open to dogs all year round.

There are many more locations around Cornwall that allow dogs throughout the year, including Mexico Towans (Hayle), Gwynver Beach (near Sennen), Harlyn Bay (near Padstow), Seaton Beach (near Looe), Porthoustock Beach (St Keverne), Summerleaze Beach (Bude) and Trebarwith Strand (near Tintagel).

At the time of writing there are almost 150 beaches in Cornwall where there are no dog bans in place (although some require you to leave your dog on the lead during the summer months). There are over 70 beaches with seasonal bans running (from July 1st to August 31st or May 15th to September 30th on the most popular beaches). These restrictions usually only apply between 10am and 6pm.
