Top 10 SUP destinations in the UK

Paddleboarding fever has taken over and SUP’ing is soon becoming the must do sport. With staycations a firm spot in our calendars, exploring new locations in the UK has never been more exciting.

Here is our run down of the top 10 places to visit with your paddleboard to make the most of the water

Ullswater, Lake District

Take in the stunning scenery as you paddle your way along one of the most iconic lake views in the UK, especially beautiful is the imposing Helvellyn Mountain in the distance. You can either do your own thing or take part in a three-hour guided tour which starts from the Steamer Pier car park in Glenridding village and finishes at Pooley Bridge in the north.

Black Rock Sands, Gwynedd

Another destination with spectacular views, meander your way along the shores of Black Rock Sands, and head east with the dramatic backdrop of the Snowdonian mountain range in the distance. There are some truly special sights along the way, including Wales’ ‘Little Italy’, Portmeirion, awash with colourful hillside buildings, bearing a striking resemblance to coastal towns on Italy’s Amalfi Coast.

Gannel Estuary, Cornwall

There are many places to paddleboard in Cornwall, but one of the most popular is the Gannel Estuary in Newquay. Also popular with swimmers, the Gannel is a great spot for paddleboarding, with a number of pretty waterways towards the village of Crantock or venture out to the sea off Crantock beach. With calm waters, the Gannel Estuary is perfect for beginners.

Woolacombe Sands, Devon

With miles of uninterrupted golden sands, Woolacombe is one of the most popular spots for both surfers and paddleboarders. It’s ideal for SUP beginners, with lots of space to explore and gain some paddle practice.

Cuckmere Haven, East Sussex

A paddleboarders dream, especially if you’re a beginner. These are some of the safest waters to paddle in as the Cuckmere Meanders are cut off from the main river and sea, meaning they are unaffected by tides and currents. You can make your way through shallow waters and eventually make your way to the beach after a short walk on foot.

Strangford Lough, County Down

One of the most popular paddleboarding spots in Northern Ireland, Strangford Lough is spread out across over 70 islands which you can explore on your paddleboard. There are a number of smaller waterways to check out and canals that span off from this huge lough.

The Rabbit Islands and North Coast 500

Follow the North Coast 500 driving route, from the hamlet of Talmine in Scotland’s far north to the uninhabited Rabbit Islands. Make sure to check the local tides and currents before you set off, and then enjoy the beautiful paddle before reaching white sandy beaches. There is so much to explore along the way, from hidden coves to amazing surf.

Norfolk Broads

Famed for boating holidays and its beautiful scenery, the Norfolk Broads are also a great place to go exploring on your paddleboard, especially if you’re a beginner. The waters are calm, while you can enjoy the beautifulscenery and nature along the many canals and lochs. You could even hire a boat and use it as your paddleboarding base.

Carrick Roads Inlet, Cornwall

Go exploring and take in the incredible scenery the Carrick Roads have to offer. From the historic harbour town of Falmouth, you can make your way in to the Roads via a plethora of stunning waterways. With Percuil River to the east and the idyllic Restrongquet Creek in the west, you’re spoilt for choice for places to discover.

Kingston Upon Thames

The world famous River Thames spans an incredible 345km from Gloucestershire to Essex, so it’s little surprise that there is myriad of spots to choose from. The section between Kingston and Richmond is particularly popular among paddleboarders, offering beautiful scenery and wildlife along the way.

Wherever you choose to paddle, do it safely. Check the tide times and currents, familiarise yourself with your local surroundings and ensure you are wearing a buoyancy aid.
