Then you might want to read on because we’re taking a look at the best wetsuits to swim in. An open water swimsuit is a little different from your average wetsuit that you’d perhaps use for surfing or bodyboarding. They are designed to be more stretchy, with more flexibility around the hips, knees and shoulders so you essentially have more room to manoeuvre and ultimately improve your performance in the water!

You can of course swim in a normal wetsuit, but as they are made with a thicker neoprene you don’t move around as freely, and if speed is one of your aims (especially if you’re competing!) then this will seriously hamper your performance.
Open water swimsuits are usually made with a super composite skin coating too, though they do come in different guises, such as the Zone3 Aspect Thermal Open Water Swimsuit which is produced with ‘Aqua-X Coating’.

Indeed, Zone3 are certainly one brand you need to consider if you’re in the market for an open water wetsuit. The brand was created in 2006 by elite triathlete and World Championship winner James Lock, whose aim was simple, and that was to create a wetsuit guaranteed to improve performance. With Lock’s knowledge and experience of competing at the highest level, combined with several years of testing and research the end result is pretty impressive and if you’re serious about triathlons or open water swimming then Zone3 is guaranteed to deliver exactly what you’re looking for.

Picking a wetsuit that’s best for you can be quite an unenviable task, especially when there are so many out there to choose from. It always pays to do your research or even speak to the experts. Our knowledge of wetsuits goes all the way back to 1978 when we began selling and renting out surfboards and wetsuits. Our dedication to providing the best possible surf experience is as evident now as it was back then with our team of experts on hand to offer all the advise you need when picking out a new wetsuit.

Another brand they would recommend is Swim Research by C-Skins. Again, with the emphasis still very much on optimising performance, the Swim Research range of wetsuits feature all of the important elements that make up a suit you feel comfortable in so that you get the very most out of your time in the water. Take the Swim Research Open Water Swimsuit for example which boasts Glideskin Xtend neoprene and Smoothskin free flex neoprene which allows you to move freely in the water.

Whichever open water wetsuit you decide to go with it’s important to remember what to look out for in the make up of your suit. It’s a given that the best wetsuits offer maximum insulation you can stay in the water for as long as you want, as well as providing buoyancy and plenty of stretch and flexibility so you can move around freely.
