Grab your walking boots, it’s time to kick those winter blues into touch and discover the wonders of the great outdoors.

Ok, so it’s easier said than done. When it’s freezing cold outside and pouring down with rain then the prospect of kicking through puddles and squelching through muddy trails is not an appealing one.

But we’re creatures of habit and if walking is not usually our ‘thing’ then it’s highly unlikely we’re going to feel the urge to get our walking boots on and go out for a stomp, especially when mother nature strikes.

There are, however, more people out walking now than there has ever been before. It was, bizarrely, prompted by a global pandemic when restrictions meant we were limited to staycations at best, with many of us venturing out for walks from home. It opened up a whole new world, discovering new places on our doorstep that had remained a mystery until now.

The beauty of walking is that it’s not only physically rewarding but from a mental perspective it’s great for the mind too. There is so much to be said for a simple old walk, and even a quick 20 minute stroll can really change your mindset for the rest of the day. There are so many benefits to walking, and here are just some of them:

There are so many more advantages to walking, and the best thing it’s free! So now that you’re ready to head outside it’s worth knowing what you need to start. Let’s begin with the most obvious, footwear. If you’re just starting out with a shorter walk then all you need are shoes or trainers that feel comfortable, provide adequate support and do not cause blisters.

If you’re planning on walking a little further than a few blocks from where you live then you might want to invest in some walking shoes for more challenging routes. They’ll be more durable, weather resistant and comfortable.

If you are heading out for longer then it’s also advisable to take a waterproof jacket and hat. And if you really want to make a day of it and you’re out for a few hours then why not go the whole hog and prepare a packed lunch, not forgetting plenty of fluids!

Speaking of step counts, if you do catch the walking bug it’s great to have an app on your phone to keep count of your daily exercise or a watch which measures just about everything, from calories burnt to steps in a day. But be warned, it’s addictive, and you might just find yourself running around the living room last thing at night in your PJs just to break 10k steps for the day!

Whatever you decide to do walking is a great way to keep fit, both in body and mind, so banish those winter woes and take your first steps into a whole new world of walking wonderfulness!
